I grew up just outside of Winnipeg, Manitoba, where I completed a B. Sc (Hons.) in Biology at the University of Winnipeg. After my undergraduate degree, I moved to Halifax and began my Ph.D. in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Gray. In the Gray Lab, I became very interested in the origin and evolution of the mitochondrial proteome. Over the course of my Ph.D., I used a combination of tandem mass spectrometry and bioinformatics in order to elucidate the composition of the mitochondrial proteome and mitochondrial electron transport chain in two protists, Tetrahymena thermophila and Acanthamoeba castellanii.
In October 2011, I began working in the Roger Lab. Again, the focus of my research relates to questions about the composition and evolution of mitochondria and mitochondrion-related organelles. For one of my projects, I am investigating the effects of reduced oxygen concentrations on the mitochondrial proteome of A. castellanii, which possesses both 'mitochondrial' and 'hydrogenosomal' energy generation pathways. My other main project is the characterization of the mitochondrion-related organelle from a novel anaerobic/microaerobic cercomonad.
